Old West Landscape, Fog On The Mesa

Landscape photography, done in an Old West style, of a foggy mountain landscape with a bare tree and red mesa.

Remember watching those old westerns on TV with dad? It was a Saturday afternoon favorite of mine. It's no wonder that I migrated west from Ohio long ago, to quench my thirst for the vast western landscapes. When I was processing this photo it just begged me to make it look aged, to fit in with that Old West feeling that still resides in my memory.

Pawnee Buttes on the High Plains of Colorado

Two buttes rise above the high plains of Colorado

Walking out to the buttes on Pawnee National Grassland in Colorado can be full of surprises especially with unpredictable spring weather. This day there were storms rolling through which made for great photography potential. Without any cover or place to retreat we were ever mindful of the lightning that accompanies such storms and probably stayed a bit too long. But the grandeur of the vista and sky were simply too hard to resist. Do you ever indulge yourself in potential risks to shoot photography?

Southwestern Red Country

I am having a love affair. It has been enticing me for many years off and on, but has come to full bloom this past spring. I am truly in love with the desert southwest. I love the sienna canyons with their majestic towering cliffs. I love the hardy desert blooms that struggle and wait patiently for that monsoon rain. I love the bluest of skies and the spectacular sunsets. And maybe most of all, I love the vastness of the landscapes. It puts you in your place instantly. You can not help but gaze in wonderment at the grand glory of it all.

Thanks for dropping by! I would love to hear your comments.

November 2010 Free Desktop Wallpaper Calendar

11-10 Fog on Mesa WallpaperNovember's calendar is a shot I took near my home in Larimer County, Colorado. This beautiful red sandstone mesa stands as a gateway to Redstone Canyon. The large old cottonwoods at the base of the mesa follow an intermittent creek bed and add seasonal color to the ancient sea bed. I particularly like to shoot photography when the weather is uncertain to get interesting effects and this foggy day transformed the landscape into muted shapes and colors. If you like this photo you might also like these similar foggy photos below. Happy November!

September 2010 Free Wallpaper Calendar

09-10 Horsetooth Autumn WallpaperWe are on the cusp of autumn. Here in the Rocky Mountains, the kids are back in school, the aspen leaves are turning, and the blankets are going back on the bed. Fall has always been my favorite season. Maybe it is the memories of the smell of a fresh box of crayons for school that I still can not resist. Maybe it was the crunch of leaves under foot and jumping into a big irresistible pile of them. Maybe it was bundling up in a soft sweater and drinking cocoa. I think perhaps it is all of that. How about you?

Fog on the Mesa

A framed photo of a heavy fog shrouds the red mesa and an leaning cottonwood tree creating an eerie atmosphere in the mists. The swirling mist was cold against my face as if an undead lover caressed my cheek. The stillness was only interrupted by the soft hiss of air against the dead leaves. I walked quietly as if I were afraid to disturb some thing that might be lurking in the fog. Camera in hand I started shooting the misty swirls of air. The tree branches stretched and reached out to me as if to stop my progress. Undaunted I continued. Then as I finished framing my last shot I caught a glimpse of movement in the distant haze. It was time to pay the price for my trespass.

Dedicated to the fans of "Twilight" and all vampire fiction. I hope you had as much fun reading this as I did writing it.

Snowy Trees in a Winter Landscape

Framed photo of snowy cottonwoods line a creek at the bottom of the towering western mesa pointing to a water source and creating layers of subtle color.
My boots crunched as I walked the dogs in the frigid morning air. Their breath puffed out in jets of steam as they charged ahead. The fresh snow outlined everything in lacy sparkling white. I had to pause and soak it in, the cold forgotten. I am the "Winter Girl." The cottonwoods on the valley floor remind me of old oil paintings of the romanticism period, with pastural meadows and large trees. It would have looked the same to a passerby one hundred years ago. My contemplations are abruptly ended by dog noses nudging me forward. It is time to continue our walk.
