Saint Teresa of Avila Church in Bodega, California

Church photography of the famous white church in Bodega, California.

This white church with a tall beautiful steeple in Bodega, California was built in 1859 by shipbuilders. It also happens to be the church used in Alfred Hitchcock's film, The Birds. I think it is a lovely little church but wanted to give it a look that could harken back to the early 1900s. So I used some post processing techniques and came up with a tintype look. I'm really curious to hear your thoughts on this one! Cheers!

Southwestern Mission In Chimayo, New Mexico

Southwestern Mission In Chimayo New Mexico

You will find that most of the photographs of El Santuario de Chimayo are of the exterior.  But for me the interior is by far the most interesting and beautiful to view.  The old Spanish mission was built in 1816 by a private individual and became a National Historic Landmark in 1970.  It is definitely a worthwhile destination on your next trip to the southwest.  I took this photo a few years ago, and have always liked the warm golden glow inside the sanctuary. I have taken a second look at it making minor improvements and have given it a new crop. If curious, you can see the earlier version and post here.

Bodega Bay, Home to Hitchcock Movie "The Birds"

A seagull sitting on a log.On a recent trip to California we visited the northern coastal town of Bodega Bay. It was not until we arrived that I realized it was the home of Alfred Hitchcock's movie, "The Birds." I remember watching that scary movie as a kid, and with that in mind, I set about recording the sights of this sleepy little coastal town. Now how on earth did Hitchcock manage to scare us with this tranquil setting?

Presbyterian Gothic Revival Church in Georgetown, Colorado

A gothic stone church with spring flowers blooming under the arched stained glass windowGothic Revival Architecture began in England in the 1740s and was present in the United States by the 19th century. Although Gothic revival buildings are not as popular since the 1930s they are still being built. This Presbyterian church was built in 1874 in Georgetown, Colorado. Georgetown started as a mining camp in 1859 and is now more famous for it's historic railroad, the Georgetown Loop.

Special thanks to Deanna for being my muse with this fine art photography Gothic Church Set. She made a special request that had me searching my archives to put this set together. Thanks Deanna!

Gothic Revival Church Architecture

The tower of a stone Gothic church reaches toward a stormy sky with green capped spires.First I want to thank all of you that have stuck by me during my internet equipment failure. I apologize for not being able to communicate or post new work and have missed you! I am excited to be able to share my work with you once again.

These photographs were taken in Georgetown, Colorado. This little church is a perfect example of Gothic Revival architecture. The influences are apparent in the pointed arches, steep gables, and spired tower. The Gothic Revival period spanned the 19th and 20th centuries and was primarily used in the design of churches and universities. It was a romantic period of Victorian architecture and was found not only in Europe but the United States, Australia, New Zealand and Bulgaria.

Smile Big

Julie Magers SoulenI have often wanted to compile a book of silly crazy photos that I have taken over the years on cross-country road trips. However I have not been that organized and most of them were with film and tossed in a box somewhere. But I did come up with a few that I found amusing. Is it just me?

Sacred Sanctuary in Chimajo, New Mexico

An ornate Spanish altar in a historical southwestern mission is rich in warm colors of orange, red, and gold and glows in the soft light. We had been visiting the historical Spanish missions in the southwestern United States on our vacation a couple years ago. Both of us appreciate old architecture, history and culture. As we went from small village to small village I discovered that most of the old churches did not allow photography inside. Discouraged but respectful I left the camera in the car and contented myself to soaking up memories. I was moved by the feeling of sacredness in these old missions. The peaceful serenity permeated the atmosphere. So when we arrived at the mission in Chimajo I expected the same, but it felt even more enduring and sacred. It almost seemed as if the hundreds of years of loving worship there had changed the structure itself. You can imagine my great delight when I was told it was permissible to photograph the inside of the mission. I very much wanted to capture the feeling of this mission and not just the image. I hope it brings you a feeling of peaceful serenity.
