Desert Bloom

My boots were kicking up the dry orange dust in small puffs on the rocky trail into Canyon de Chelly. My eyes were darting about taking in the dramatic red sandstone canyon and making me wish I had a wide angle lens to capture it all in one gulp. I paused in a patch of rare shade cast by a scraggly cedar and saw a brilliant red patch of desert paintbrush. It was alone in the dusty landscape of scrub brush and rock making a bold statement of I am. Smiling with my discovery I shot this photo. I hope you enjoy this desert beauty.

July 2011 Fireworks Flower Free Desktop Wallpaper Calendar

July is a month of fireworks, barbecues, and hot sunny days. It is the peak of summer in the northern hemisphere and most of us look forward to it. Shifting Gears in San Francisco

The bustling international city of San Francisco is a big contrast to my daily life of quiet living off-grid in the northern Colorado Rockies and I love it! It has always been our favorite city destination and still is. It is fun to look at the haute couture on Union Square, shop for souvenirs in Chinatown, and have a martini in the famous Redwood Room at the Clift.

San Francisco is full of contrasts too. Seeing the red Ferrari in Chinatown was not that unusual but still a major contrast to the primarily walking crowd. Our room at the Monaco was very cosmopolitan but kitschy as well. And if you want to see street vendors next to shops of famous designer couture then Union Square is where you will be.

Next visit will definitely have to be longer!

February 2011 Free Desktop Wallpaper Calendar

For the February 2011 wallpaper calendar I chose a harbinger of spring. I had decided to do flowers for the calendar this year and had to ponder what flower blooms in February? Then I remembered that the amaryllis bulbs in my home bloom in February. I liked that this perfect crimson flower had a tiny vein of white. It gave it a personality all its own in my mind.

You might have noticed that I have expanded the number of monitor sizes available and have also offered one for an iPhone4. I hope you find the perfect version for your use and enjoy this splash of red in the month of love.

Framed Red Flower Photo - Tropical Beauty

It was a warm summer day when I took this photograph of a coral red hibiscus. The bushy plant with dark waxy leaves was peppered with beautiful blossoms that day. The flowers only last for a day before they shrivel and drop, but their short life is brilliant. My hibiscus lives inside now as it would not survive the bitter cold Colorado winter. It musters up one little pale blossom occasionally. But I know that this summer it will burst forth in all its beauty once again.

A Healthy Start with a Bowl of Berries

Last year I lost 17 pounds. I gained a couple back over the holidays but I am getting back to better habits again. The Christmas cookies are gone! I have no doubt I will lose the last few pounds and be back to the weight I was in my twenties. No kidding! You may ask how I am doing this. The easiest answer is quality homemade food; no sugar, no white flour, no food in a box. It is satisfying, nourishing and weight reducing. And I could not feel more energetic. If you would like to know more details on how you can lose those excess holiday pounds I highly recommend the "South Beach Diet." It is a healthy plan and has worked for me. Now I'm going to make this luscious bowl of berries disappear!

Red Floral Verbena

I was looking through some photos that I took this past summer and this vibrant scarlet flower jumped out at me. Sometimes it is just plain hard to let go of summer's beautiful color and bounty. So to hold on just a little bit longer to the warm glow of summer past and carry it with us into the slumbering winter months I share with you my way of seeing a brilliant red verbena. Enjoy!

Red Ruffles and Dew Drops

A crimson flower opens to the early morning light, sparkling with morning dew like a Hollywood starlet wearing a gown of rhinestones and red satin at a movie premier. She is a flashy flower standing out in a crowd of tiny wildflowers in soft pastel hues on my summer deck. And like most ingenues her time is brief. As my demure houseplants come in for the winter she is left looking more and more ragged to face the first frost alone. But when she was in her prime she was a show stopper!

Farmers Market

Going to the Farmers Market is one of my favorite summer time activities. I love looking at the rows of fruit and vegetables just waiting for a taste. Anyone that has ever eaten a peach off of a tree or sweet corn picked within hours knows what I am talking about. Today's corporate farms have nothing over these small farmers when it comes to taste and nutrition. Tomatoes happen to be one of my favorites and I love them paired with sweet corn. What is your favorite?

Tropical Beauty Hibiscus

Every year I buy plants to decorate my deck and make it into our favorite outdoor room. Even though we only get to use it a few months every year we always look forward to outdoor dining and relaxing. This year I found this tropical hibiscus at the grocery and could not resist that beautiful coral red color. It has given me one or two new blooms every day all summer. I intend to bring it inside for the winter. Does anyone have any tips? Thanks everyone!

Indian Paintbrush in the Colorado Rocky Mountains

Spring is coming. Can you smell it in the air? I can. It puts a bounce in my step and anticipation in my heart. The spring wildflowers in the Rocky Mountains are spectacular when the winter snows are deep. This should be a very good year. One of my favorites, Indian Paintbrush or sometimes called Prairie Fire, grows at high elevations and low. Spring will come and new paintbrush will sprout. I can't wait!

Rising

According to astrology some of us are ruled by the sun and some by the moon, not to mention many other planets.
