Sunday Morning Gallery - Autumn's First Kiss

In the Colorado Rockies it has been an unusually wet and cool summer. It almost seems as if we are skipping summer and going from spring right into fall. I should not complain. I am really not a hot weather person. But to see the foliage starting to turn seems just a bit too soon. Having said that, I love autumn in Colorado. The nights turn crisp with clear brilliant starry skies and the days are still warm and sunny. Here are a couple early autumn photographs for your pleasure.

Buffalo Dreams

The dust covers the huge woolly beast as he rolls in the prairie dirt shaking his shaggy head. Or did I dream this? Tell me your thoughts on this one.

Sunday Morning Gallery - Rodeo in Motion

It was a sweltering day in Larimer County Colorado. The pungent smell of livestock and cotton candy filled the air. I was wearing my straw Stetson and could soon feel the sweat trickling down my neck. So after checking out the carnival for sticky sweet shots of ferris wheels and amusing stilt people I was more than ready to go to the rodeo. You see, it was inside an air conditioned arena with icy cold beer and box seats above the dust. So sit back, prop your feet up, tip a cold one and enjoy going to the rodeo with me.

The churning hooves of the speeding rodeo pony sent dust flying while the rider floated on his back as if he had become one with his mount.

The young man stepped down into the chute mentally preparing himself for this moment. Will he or the horse triumph?

The cowboy's world had stopped motion during his heavy concentration to stay on the bucking twisting mount. Finally the beautiful white horse triumphed and his rider was cast off.

The large white horse ran free around the arena in his celebration but soon the riders caught up to him.

Are they really going to ride those?

The one armed man rode hard and fast, cracking his whip in the air, his pony a streak past the cheering spectators.

Modern rodeos in the United States are closely regulated and have responded to accusations of animal cruelty by instituting a number of rules to guide how rodeo animals are to be managed. A survey of 28 sanctioned rodeos was conducted by on-site independent veterinarians. Reviewing 33,991 animal runs, the injury rate was documented at .00047 percent, or less than five-hundredths of one percent. Health regulations mandate vaccinations and blood testing of horses crossing state lines, so rodeo horses receive routine care. PRCA regulations require veterinarians to be available at all rodeos to treat both bucking stock and other animals as needed.

Sunday Morning Gallery - Abert's Squirrel Mama

This week I saw a small and diminutive version of our usually demonstrative and rambunctious Abert's squirrels. I'm guessing it was a she. I'm basing my decision on the fact that she had obviously been nursing babies. Anyone that has had a mama cat or dog knows what I mean. If you look closely at the photo you can see little bare belly patches.

Mating season for Abert's squirrels can run from late February through early June. During mating season the female is followed by small groups of males. The males chase the female through the trees providing free entertainment for hours. The female usually has only one litter a year with one to five babies. The babies are born without fur and their eyes are closed. They may start to climb down to the ground when they are about seven weeks old and are weaned after about 10 weeks.

I'll be watching for those babies!

Yellow Lily Fine Art Greeting Card

This yellow lily was growing in my garden in the northern Colorado Rockies. Our growing season is not only short but usually dry making it tough on flowers. But this summer has been cool with regular rain and the flowers have loved it! My lilies never looked better. Send a ray of sunshine to someone today!

Sunday Morning Gallery - Florilegium

Summer is fleeting in the high country of Colorado. The mountain mahoganies are starting to turn burnt orange and the wild currants are loaded with berries. Before summer is totally gone I could not resist doing a few more flowers. We will soon be watching snow fly and I wanted to hold on to the soft blooms just a bit longer. I hope you enjoy these newest flowers in my Flower Collection.

Florilegium first appeared in the English language in 1711 describing a collection of flower illustrations. Today it more commonly refers to a collection of literary pieces or an anthology, but I thought it appropriate to use its earliest definition for my newest flower collection.

vivid blue wild geranium
The term geranium is confusing. The first geranium most gardeners encounter is not a geranium at all, but the less hardy Pelargonium. Hardy geraniums are sometimes referred to as cranesbill geraniums. The flowers float on top of the plant, in shades of white, pink, magenta, purples and blues. Some species are sometimes grown for the edible bulbs.

yellow lily
Lilies are leafy stemmed herbs. They form underground bulbs from which they overwinter. The large flowers have six tepals, are often fragrant, and come in a range of colours ranging through whites, yellows, oranges, pinks, reds and purples.

white flower of monument plant
Monument Plant, common in mountain meadows, is a robust and showy plant that scatters itself over large areas. The tall flower stalks erupting from a very large basal rosette of leaves attract our attention, but a careful look around will reveal numerous smaller Monument Plants not in flower. The broad leaves are shaped like the ears of a deer, giving it one of its common names, Deer's Ears.
