Rocky Mountain Bighorn Sheep Band of Brothers, Animal Photography, Colorado

This Rocky Mountain bighorn sheep "band of brothers" was photographed in the now closed Big Thompson Canyon east of Estes Park, Colorado, due to the devastating floods which occurred this past September 2013. When I shot this photo they were next to the highway wanting to cross but confused by the traffic and people stopping. I like to think that for the next several months to a year my inconvenience at not having access to Estes Park and Rocky Mountain National Park will be rewarded because the wildlife of the canyon, including this wild band of bighorns, have reclaimed their canyon home for a time. It makes me happy.

Rocky Mountain Bighorn Sheep Ram, Animal Photography, near Estes Park Colorado

Last spring we did an overnight trip up to Estes Park, Colorado. On our way home down the Big Thompson Canyon we encountered a group of bachelor Rocky Mountain Bighorn Sheep rams. This particular fellow was a stand out from his band of brothers and inspired me to give him a "canvas" of his own. I removed him from the original photograph and gave him a background inspired by the spirit of earth in hues of granite, sandstone and quartz. I hope you like my artistic approach to photography and enjoy sharing it!

Giraffe Crisscross

Giraffes are one of those African animals that belong to the rich world of a child's imagination. The ridiculously long neck and patchwork hide of russet color make the perfect animal companion on a whimsical adventure in the Land of the Lion King. When this tall fellow crossed in front of the brick wall at the Denver Zoo I was delighted with the repetitive patterns crisscrossing before my eyes. I hope you enjoy it too!

Cattle on the Open Range of Colorado's High Plains

On a day trip to the Pawnee Buttes in eastern Colorado's High Plains I spotted the cow and her two calves traveling across the dry and dusty landscape. With the stormy sky overhead and a promise of rain she seemed to be heading toward that promise.

Ironically a lot of the western USA is suffering with drought at the same time that the eastern USA is flooding. Learn more about global climate change.

Elk at Rocky Mountain National Park, Colorado

Autumn in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado makes me think of elk. The young bachelors, who lazily hang out all summer getting strong on the lush new grass, become restless and seek to dethrone an old bull by capturing his females. It is an exciting time in the life of an elk and just as exciting for me to watch. This summer I came upon one of those bachelor herds of young bulls and they were magnificent. Each one looked very capable of stealing a harem for his own. I wonder if any of the challengers have been successful and are now the one to be challenged?

Elk Meadow

This time of year in Rocky Mountain National Park, Colorado, you might hear a high pitched whistle coming from the alpine meadows. It is the sound of a bull elk calling to claim his harem and challenge other bulls. The sound makes me think of autumn campfires and coyote cries taking me to another era in time, one long long ago. My spirit craves this and I find myself wandering with the herd keeping watch and feeling alive. Sights sounds smells mingle in the primal musk of procreation and life. Nature continues.
